Mumbai: The rupee strengthened 11 paise to 72.54 per dollar in early trade on Monday due to softening of US currency and continued investment by foreign investors. In the interbanking currency market, the rupee opened at 72.58 per dollar and later reached 72.54 per dollar. This is a gain of 11 paise from the previous day's level. The rupee had closed at 72.65 per dollar on Thursday. 

The currency markets were closed on Friday on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. Meanwhile, the dollar index fell 0.04 percent to 90.32 in the basket of six major currencies. Foreign portfolio investors were net buyers in the capital market. He bought shares worth Rs 118.75 crore on Friday. Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude was up 1.06 percent at $ 62.80 a barrel.
