US President Joe Biden's special envoy for climate, John Kerry, said on Tuesday that he has told the Indian government that it is imperative to pursue climate-related goals. He expressed confidence that India will make some announcements during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (CAP-26) in Glasgow, UK. The conference will run from October 31 to November 12.
Kerry said that if India succeeds in achieving the target of 450 GW of renewable energy by 2030, it will be a major contribution to a developing country's efforts to keep the world's temperature rise at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Kerry was asked by the media whether he had asked the Indian government to pursue its climate ambitions, he said, "I told him it was urgent." We have to do this. People have clearly said no or no to me. I haven't met anyone who has said it's a useless idea and we're not going to do it.
Kerry said there needs to be internal consultations in India to make this decision. I am sure that India is going to announce something or the other while going to CAP-26 and that too like you have not heard from many other countries till now.
