Andhra HC directs CBI to probe manhandling of suspended doctor by police in Vizag

In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh supreme court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the alleged manhandling of Dr Sudhakar Rao by Vishakhapatnam Police. The apex investigative agency has been asked to submit a report during this regard within 8 weeks.

A bench of the HC has also instructed the CBI to register a case against policemen involved within the incident. The court had earlier asked a Sessions judge to record the statement of Dr Sudhakar Reddy who is currently undergoing treatment at the Vishakhapatnam psychological state Hospital.

Based on a report from the Sessions judge which mentioned six injuries on the doctor as a results of alleged manhandling, the HC on Friday asked the CBI to require up the case.

The Andhra Pradesh Police had claimed that a team of policemen was dispatched to the spot after a complaint was made to dial 100 a few man creating ruckus at 3:45 PM on May 15. once they (policemen) tried to prevent the person , he abused, removed his shirt, and hurled food items at them, the police stated.

Following his arrest, Dr Sudhakar Rao was booked under Sections 353 and 427 of the Indian legal code (IPC). However, a video of his arrest was shared by TDP leader and former CM Chandrababu Naidu on social media platforms. In his posts, Naidu criticized Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy for the state police's handling of the "Dalit doctor".

The Andhra Pradesh and YSRCP cadre responded by terming doctor Rao "Chandrababu's puppet". "His (Dr Rao's) mental condition is sort of unstable and even within the past, there have been a couple of such incidents involving Dr Sudhakar. Before raising allegations against the govt , he has got to understand the important motives of Chandrababu Naidu in using him as a coy. This single incident proved that Chandrababu Naidu can patronize any level for his self gains and a minimum of from now on he has got to better stop using Dalits, as they're not getting to fall for his words anymore." YSRCP MLA Sudhakar Babu said.

Dr Sudhakar Rao had made headlines after he claimed that there aren't enough personal protection equipment (PPE) kits and face masks for doctors at hospitals handling novel coronavirus patients in Andhra Pradesh . He was suspended by the government soon after.
