Central government announces 'Satyajit Ray Award' ahead of Bengal assembly elections

Kolkata: Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday announced a National Level Film Award in the name of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Javadekar made this announcement at an event organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in Kolkata. An artist present at the event gave this information.
Media was not allowed in the program. In the program, the Union Minister interacted with the leading actors and directors of West Bengal. Assembly elections are due in Bengal in April-May. More details on 'Satyajit Ray Award' have not been available yet. Senior actress and BJP leader Rupa Ganguly, who was present at the function, said it is great that an award is being instituted in Ray's name. "It has been planned for a long time," he told a news channel.
Director Arindam Sil said that there was a discussion with the Union Minister on how to develop the Bengali film industry. The event was attended by actresses Paoli Dam, Abir Chattopadhyay, Rituparna Sengupta, director Gautam Ghosh, classical singer Rashid Khan, singer-union minister Babul Supriyo and other dignitaries.
