Lucknow: Man poses as SP to urge his telephone repaired, held

LUCKNOW: To revive his snag-hit cellphone during the lockdown period, a 23-year-old Azamgarh youth displayed a touch of swagger to intimidate cops by impersonating as superintendent of police and ordering the force to repair his mobile or face the results . He nearly succeeded in his plan, till his lid was blown off and was thrown behind bars on Tuesday.
Shubham Upadhayay, the accused, used a free caller identification app to call up the in-charge of Kotwali police headquarters , KK Gupta, and threatened to shunt him out, if he did not swiftly get the work done. Though initially jolted by the order, the cop grew suspicious and eventually caught the youth within the act.
Talking to TOI, Azamgarh SP Triveni Singh said the accused narrated the sequence of events resulting in his arrest. Son of a farmer, Shubham passed his graduation with honours last year and was preparing for competitive exams when his phone developed a snag on Saturday. He tried to succeed in bent local mechanics, but they were unavailable to repair it thanks to the lockdown.
In his statement to the police, Shubham said, “On Sunday noon, i attempted to breach district borders to succeed in Lucknow to repair my phone, but witnessing heavy police presence and barricading, I returned home. Later, I installed a free caller identification app in my handset and mentioned the name as SP Azamgarh and even uploaded a photograph of the cop to seem genuine,” he told cops.
He first called SHO, Kotwali to urge the phone repaired and was told the handset would be picked up from the SP office in an hour. Then, he called a businessman to bring his SUV and fork over his mobile to the SHO. But when Shubham called the police again to suggest a separate meeting point, while threatening to punish the SHO for not following instructions, he raised suspicion. When the SHO tried to verify the venue, Shubham got hesitant and said he would send a peon.
“I suddenly realised something was fishy and rang up the professional of SP Azamgarh, who denied any such order from the SP. When the caller’s number was scanned, it displayed the name of SP Azamgarh,” said SHO Gupta. Soon a trap was laid and when the SHO reached the venue, he found one Praveen Shukla sitting within the vehicle. Police asked the address of the accused from Shukla and reached Shubham’s range in Bilariya locality and arrested him. He was booked thereunder Act and for threatening a employee .
