Lucknow: Renowned theater artist and litterateur Urmil Kumar Thapliyal passed away here on Tuesday after prolonged illness. Family sources gave this information. He told that Thapliyal (78), suffering from colon cancer, breathed his last late Tuesday evening. His family consists of wife, son and daughter. Thapliyal, who worked all his life for the revival of Nautanki and popularizing theatre, was associated with 'Darpan', a 50-year-old popular theater group based in Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, and had also worked with All India Radio for a long time.

The death of Thapliyal has created a wave of mourning among the theater workers and art lovers of the capital. In a condolence message, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, "Through his brilliance, Thapliyal has enriched the world of theater and literature. His death has left a void in the field of art and literature which will be difficult to fill." Praying for the peace of the departed soul, the Chief Minister also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

The injured were sent to the hospital where doctors declared the three youths brought dead, he said. He said that six other people were injured in the accident. The injured are being treated in Agra.
